[<em>Public Goods, Private Goods<\/em>, 114]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having\ndescribed some of the many purposes served by the distinction between public\nand private, Geuss condemns the liberal division as addressing \u2018the highly\nparochial problems of a particular kind of society that has thrown itself with\na will into a certain very specific process of economic and political\ndevelopment \u2026\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>World events since the turn of the century have put strain on an already\nbeleaguered understanding of the public and the private. These include the war\non terror, the financial crisis, climate crisis, and the current Covid-19 pandemic, the rapid rise of social media, state capitalism,\ngeopolitical tension, and escalating conflict over gender and race.\nThe editors of this special issue invite reflections on such disruptive events since 2000 to our conceptions of, and our putative need for, a\ndistinction between the public and the private. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Questions\nfor discussion include<\/strong>, but are by no means limited to<strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Since the 1970s, <strong>feminist critique&nbsp;<\/strong>of&nbsp;the liberal public\/private distinction, advocating the need for public\nprotection within the \u2018private sphere\u2019 to which many women are confined. How do\nwe update these concerns in the light of events this century?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 The Covid-19 <strong>pandemic<\/strong> has forced populations\nthroughout the world to retreat to the private sphere. What are the\nimplications of this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Does the #MeToo movement, or the exposure of <strong>sexual\nharassment <\/strong>more generally, require a rethinking of the public\/private\ndistinction? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Do we need the distinction to\ncognize the <strong>duties and rights of parents<\/strong>, given, for example, new laws\nagainst corporal punishment and a growing anti-vaccine movement, ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 How has <strong>social media <\/strong>affected traditional\nconceptions of privacy, publicity and proportionate limits in relations between\nthe public and private spheres?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 The global <strong>financial <\/strong>crises of 2008 and 2020\nchallenged the distinction to stimulate the economy. Where does\nthis shift balance\nbetween public and private economic interests? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Do <strong>public &#8211; private <\/strong>partnerships undermine\nthe legitimacy or security of public services? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 How does <strong>state capitalism <\/strong>(i.e., state\ncontrolled economic activity) challenge liberal dispositions toward the place\nof public and private?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 What significance have the <strong>war on terror <\/strong>and its long afterlife&nbsp;had on the distinction and its usefulness? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 What significance does the distinction hold in <strong>African\n<\/strong><strong>and other<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;non-Western traditions<\/strong>? Need these traditions be\nupdated in the light of events this century? Is there inspiration to be found\nin these traditions for a renewed public\/private distinction?&nbsp;\n&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 How is the public\/private distinction related to <strong>globalization<\/strong>,\nor to the retreat we are presently seeing from globalization? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The deadline for submissions\nis 31 August 2021. This issue of <em>Philosophical Papers<\/em>, comprising both\ninvited and submitted articles, will appear in November of 2021. Manuscripts\nshould be submitted electronically, as a pdf or word-document attachment, to\n&lt;<a href=\"mailto:philosophical.papers@ru.ac.za\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">philosophical.papers@ru.ac.za<\/a>&gt;.
