The\noutbreak of COVID-19 has profoundly disrupted the patterns of everyday\nexistence, impacting upon social, legal and economic spheres. The scramble to\nrespond to the threat posed by the rapid spread of the virus has, in many\ncases, led to a suspension of ordinary politics whilst at the same time\nthrowing into sharp relief the profoundly political nature of the pandemic. In\naddition to the new issues that have arisen regarding detection and treatment\nof the COVID-19 virus, perennial political issues regarding the limits of\npolitical authority, racial and gender justice, and populism and demagoguery\nhave thrust themselves to the forefront of mainstream political discourse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This\nspecial issue invites papers that cast a critical perspective upon the\npolitical dimensions of the current pandemic. Whilst papers on any aspect of\nthe pandemic are acceptable, the guest editors particularly welcome papers that\nfocus on aspects of the pandemic in relation to the Southern hemisphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Possible topics might include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Politics\nby other means?: The use of pandemic for political purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– The\nCOVID-19 crisis as an opportunity for progressive social politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Plandemic!\n\u2013 disease and conspiracy theories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– The\npolitics of social distancing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– The\npolitical implications of governmental responses to the pandemic;  government control of coronavirus data; exclusivist\nnational stockpiling of COVID-19 treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Disaster\nCapitalism: The pandemic as both disruptor and accelerant of neoliberal\nnormality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Virtual\nliberty?: Lockdown existence and the triumph of networked society. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Sex in a\ntime of COVID-19: The impact of the pandemic on sexual relations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Dying for\ncapitalism: The trade-off between commercial and public health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Home\/work:\nthe effects of working from home on domestic relations; the gendered and racial\nimbalance of remote labour; productivity porn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Policing\nthe pandemic: Authoritarianism and security; poverty and\/as disease; pandemic\nmasculinities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Planet or people first?: Environmentalism in a time of pandemic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
